Chennai, Jul 24: In a chilling conclusion to a case that shocked Tamil Nadu, the Kancheepuram Principal Sessions Court on Thursday handed rigorous life imprisonment until death to Abirami (32) and her lover Meenatchisundaram (35) for the cold-blooded murders of Abirami’s two young children in 2018.
The court, led by Principal Sessions Judge Beeju Chemmal, rejected Abirami’s plea for leniency, noting the gravity and premeditated nature of the crimes, and imposed three consecutive life sentences on each convict, along with a fine of Rs 15,000. Failure to pay will result in an additional three-year prison term.

“The crime is grave and cold-blooded. Life imprisonment alone is insufficient. They must remain behind bars for their natural lives,” the court declared.
Murder Fueled by Illicit Affair
Known on local social media as “Biryani Abirami” for her food videos, Abirami was living with her husband Vijay and two children in Kundrathur when she began an extramarital affair with Meenatchisundaram, a biryani delivery agent.
As the affair grew serious, Meenatchisundaram reportedly urged her to kill her family, especially after it was exposed.
On a September night in 2018, Abirami laced the family’s milk with sleeping pills. Her daughter Karnika (4) died from the drugged milk, while her husband Vijay and son Ajay (6) survived. The next morning, as Ajay lay drowsy, she smothered him with a pillow.
She then hid the bodies, intending to kill Vijay as well, but abandoned the plan when he returned late from work. The following day, the couple fled to Kanyakumari, and Vijay, discovering the bodies, alerted the police.
Court Raps Police for Lapses
Judge Chemmal also criticised the police for procedural lapses, including the delay in producing the accused in court, and allowing Abirami to cover her face with a shawl, which the court said posed a suicide risk and should never have been permitted.
The court also dismissed the police inspector’s explanation—citing his child’s illness—as “unacceptable in the discharge of official duty.”
Public Reaction
The high-profile double murder, marked by betrayal and brutality, drew widespread attention, especially due to Abirami’s local internet fame. A large crowd gathered outside the court to witness the long-awaited verdict.
The End of a Grim Chapter
This judgment closes a five-year saga that began with casual biryani deliveries and spiraled into a brutal double murder, shaking public conscience. The court’s strong ruling sends a clear message about the weight of justice in cases involving innocent children and premeditated violence.
