New Delhi, Jul 21: In a major breakthrough, Delhi Police have arrested two seasoned criminals involved in a series of thefts across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. The duo was nabbed following an intensive investigation into a high-profile burglary reported in Old Rajinder Nagar earlier this year.
The case dates back to May 27, when a local resident lodged a complaint about missing diamond, gold and silver jewellery, along with Rs 15,000–20,000 in cash. The FIR, initially registered at the Rajinder Nagar Police Station, was later transferred to the Special Staff of the Central District.
Acting on CCTV footage, manual surveillance and advanced tracking techniques, the team zeroed in on the suspects. On July 18, based on a tip-off, a trap was laid near Shivaji Park, Minto Road, leading to their arrest.
Seasoned offenders
The accused have been identified as 40-year-old Akbar alias Firoz alias Babu from Loni, Ghaziabad, and Ramesh alias Kallu, also 40, from Maujpur in Delhi.
Akbar, declared a Proclaimed Offender in December 2021, is linked to over 20 cases of theft and burglary across major cities. Ramesh, declared a Proclaimed Offender in May 2022, has 13 criminal cases against him, including charges under the Arms Act and attempt to murder.
Shocking confessions
During interrogation, the two admitted to the Old Rajinder Nagar burglary and revealed their involvement in a massive heist at CR Park, where they allegedly stole 1 kg of gold, 1 kg of silver, and Rs 20 lac in cash. They further confessed to over 16 thefts in total.
Police said the duo would divide the stolen valuables in Seemapuri, North East Delhi. They also named an accomplice, Monu alias Abhishek, who is currently absconding.
Further investigations are underway, and police are on the lookout for the third accused.
