Greater Noida, Jul 19: A second-year BDS student of Sharda University allegedly died by suicide inside the women’s hostel on Friday night, sparking protests and leading to the arrest of two faculty members.

The student, identified as Jyoti Sharma from Gurugram, left behind a suicide note in which she named two staff members from the PCP and Dental Material departments, accusing them of mental harassment and humiliation. “They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been in stress for a long time. I am sorry. I can’t live like this anymore,” the note read.

The incident was reported at Knowledge Park Police Station. Greater Noida ADCP Sudhir Kumar confirmed that both accused faculty members have been arrested based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family. A forensic team also inspected the hostel room to collect evidence.

The incident triggered late-night protests by students, especially hostel residents, who raised slogans against the university administration and demanded justice.

Sharda University has suspended the accused staff and formed a high-powered inquiry committee to probe the matter. “The university is fully cooperating with the authorities. All required documentation and access have been extended,” the Director of Public Relations stated.

The body has been sent for post-mortem and a thorough investigation is ongoing. Police have assured the family and classmates of a fair and transparent probe.

The tragedy comes shortly after a similar case in Odisha, where a student died after setting herself ablaze, alleging harassment by a lecturer.
