Rahul Gandhi targets Assam CM, alleges corruption and voter manipulation

Guwahati, Jul 16: Launching a fierce political attack in Assam, leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of corruption and misuse of power, declaring that Sarma “will end up in jail.”

Speaking at a party workers' gathering in Chaygaon, near Guwahati, Gandhi alleged that the Chief Minister behaves like a monarch, handing over Assam’s land and resources for personal and corporate gains.

“He thinks he’s a king, but look at his face on television – it’s full of fear. He knows the Congress will hold him accountable,” Gandhi told the crowd.

He claimed that not even Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah would be able to shield Sarma or his family from the consequences of alleged corrupt practices.

Gandhi also accused the BJP and the Election Commission of India of manipulating voter rolls, particularly targeting opposition-leaning states.

“In Maharashtra, they added over one crore new voters in just four months, tilting the outcome in BJP’s favour,” Gandhi said, also warning of similar tactics being used in Bihar and a potential repeat in Assam.

He urged party workers to stay vigilant and resist any moves to remove opposition supporters from electoral lists.

Rahul Gandhi didn’t spare the media either, alleging that it now acts as an ally of the government.

“The media has stopped telling the truth. But the people see through this. Assam will give the BJP a fitting reply in next year’s Assembly elections,” he said.

He also criticized land acquisition across the country, accusing the BJP of snatching land from farmers and small traders to benefit large industrialists.

“From Maharashtra to Assam, land is being handed over to corporate houses. The backbone of India — farmers, small traders, and workers — is being systematically crushed,” he charged.

Framing the larger political narrative as an ideological battle, Gandhi said the choice before the nation is between the “hatred and violence of the RSS” and the “truth and non-violence of the Congress.”

He praised newly appointed Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and said the party is gearing up for a resurgence in the state.

“There are two Hindustans today,” Gandhi concluded. “One for billionaires enjoying lavish lifestyles, and another for ordinary citizens burdened with rising prices and heavy taxation. Congress is here to fight for the latter.”
