Kentucky, Jul 14: A gunman opened fire inside the Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington on Sunday, killing two women and injuring two men before shooting and wounding a state trooper near Blue Grass Airport. The assailant was later shot dead by police.
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers confirmed the grim sequence of events at a press briefing, saying, “There are days like today that are extremely difficult. Sometimes things happen, you just don’t have a reason why.”
The incident began around 11:30 am when a state trooper attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle near the airport in Fayette County. The man opened fire, injuring the trooper. The confrontation occurred on a road near the airport but did not impact airport operations.
Earlier that day, the same suspect allegedly stormed into the Richmond Road Baptist Church and began shooting. Two women were fatally shot, while two other men sustained injuries—one of whom is in critical condition.
Authorities have not released the identity or age of the suspect, and the motive remains unclear.
The situation has left the local community shaken, as law enforcement continues the investigation into what led to the deadly attacks.
