New York, Jul 14: As international travel surges this summer, health officials are sounding the alarm over a sharp global comeback of measles in 2025. The virus is spreading rapidly across North America, Europe, and parts of the Americas, raising concerns for tourists and families heading abroad.
In the United States, the current outbreak is the worst since 1992, with 1,288 confirmed cases across 39 states. West Texas alone has reported 753 infections and at least three deaths. Canada is also struggling, with 227 cases by early March, prompting travel advisories for outbound passengers.

Europe is seeing a dramatic spike, with nearly 1,000 cases reported in April across 29 countries, including France, Romania, Belgium, and Spain. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recorded more than 22,000 cases in a single year, mostly among unvaccinated youth.
The Americas are also witnessing a surge, with the WHO confirming over 2,300 cases from January to April. Clusters have emerged in Mexico, Argentina, and Belize, which reported its first local transmission since 1991. The virus in Belize was traced to returning travelers, highlighting the risks of global spread.
Airports, hotels, and buses are common points of exposure, with confirmed cases linked to busy transit hubs like JFK and Denver. Health experts warn that travelers who aren’t fully vaccinated could be at risk of infection and even quarantine.
Doctors advise getting two doses of the MMR vaccine, which offers 97% protection. Infants heading to high-risk areas may receive a dose as early as six months. Travelers showing symptoms such as rash, cough, or fever are urged to wear a mask, isolate, and seek immediate care.
Post-exposure measures such as MMR boosters or immunoglobulin may be provided in some countries, depending on the situation. After returning home, travelers are advised to monitor their health for up to 21 days.
With measles spreading across borders, experts say that one of the most effective travel companions in 2025 is a complete MMR vaccination.
