Couple tied to yoke, forced to plough field for marrying against custom

Rayagada, Jul 11: In a shocking case of social cruelty, a young couple in Odisha’s Rayagada district was publicly humiliated and forced to plough a field like animals after marrying against local customs.

The disturbing incident took place in Kanjamajhira village, where the couple reportedly related as the woman’s paternal aunt’s son had recently tied the knot. Their union was deemed taboo by some villagers, prompting a brutal form of punishment.

A viral video of the incident has triggered widespread outrage on social media. It shows the couple tied to a wooden yoke, typically used for oxen, and being forced to drag it across a field while being beaten with sticks by two men.

As if the humiliation was not enough, the couple was later taken to the village shrine and subjected to so-called "purification rituals" to atone for their perceived social transgression.

Superintendent of Police S Swati Kumar confirmed on Friday that a police team has visited the village. “An investigation is underway, and a case will be registered soon,” she said.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from activists and rights groups, who have called for strict action against those involved in the inhuman treatment of the couple.
