Washington, Jul 8: US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States will send additional military aid to Ukraine, shortly after Russia announced fresh territorial gains in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Speaking from the White House on Monday, Trump acknowledged Ukraine’s worsening situation under heavy Russian missile and drone assaults. “We’re going to have to send more weapons — defensive weapons primarily,” he said, expressing concern over the scale of attacks and adding, “They’re getting hit very, very hard.”
His remarks come amid heightened tensions, following a temporary pause in American arms shipments that left Ukrainian officials seeking clarity. The delay, brief but unexpected, raised alarms in Kyiv at a time when Russian forces were intensifying attacks.
Moscow claimed its forces had captured a village in central Ukraine — the first such gain in Dnipropetrovsk since launching offensives in the region. Russian media reported that the advance was preceded by targeted strikes on Ukraine’s military recruitment centres.
In response, Ukraine said it had launched a drone attack on a Russian ammunition factory near Moscow, signalling its commitment to continue both defensive and retaliatory operations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also addressed the international community through a post on X, stating that Kyiv was working to strengthen global defence ties. “I instructed Ukraine’s Minister of Defence to prepare the next Ramstein meetings in various formats,” Zelensky wrote, noting that support from partners like the UK and Germany remains crucial.
He also highlighted Russia’s increasing reliance on Iranian-origin "Shahed" drones, stating, “They have few options left to prolong the war... I thank everyone helping us counter these attacks and defending against Russian missiles.”
Trump’s assurance of renewed military support may serve as a strategic message to both allies and adversaries amid escalating tensions, particularly as Ukraine pushes for stronger international backing to counter Russia’s evolving tactics.
