Prayagraj, Jul 6: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari on Sunday condemned what he called a “disgusting and shameful attempt” by BJP supporters to malign Rahul Gandhi by circulating a fake image showing his photo on sanitary pads.
The controversy erupted after images began circulating on social media, allegedly showing packets of sanitary pads distributed under the Congress’ Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana — a menstrual hygiene awareness initiative in Bihar — bearing Rahul Gandhi’s picture. Tiwari dismissed the visuals as doctored, claiming no such branding existed on the actual distributed products.

Speaking to reporters, Tiwari said, “This fake video reflects the poor mentality of BJP supporters. The Congress used its limited resources to distribute sanitary pads to support women’s health — something the BJP government has failed to prioritise — and they respond by spreading lies.”
He criticised the BJP’s tactics as indicative of a deeper discomfort with issues related to women’s welfare and accused the ruling party of attempting to derail meaningful initiatives with misinformation.
On the ongoing voter list controversy in Bihar, the Congress leader also attacked the Election Commission, alleging arbitrary rejections of Aadhaar-based voter registrations. “If someone has an Aadhaar card and resides in a locality, their name should be included. The BJP itself once said in Parliament that Aadhaar proves Indianness. So why is it being invalidated now? Are citizens now supposed to submit horoscopes?” he said.
Tiwari also raised questions about the recent arrest of Nehal Modi, brother of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, accusing the government of allowing high-profile economic offenders to escape. “Who let them flee when CBI and ED probes were underway? These are serious questions,” he said.
Hitting out at the Centre’s inaction on long-promised targets, Tiwari said, “PM Modi had said Dawood Ibrahim would be brought back in six months. What happened to that promise? Where are terrorists like Masood Azhar and Hafiz Saeed now? Has the BJP provided any update on the actions taken against them?”
On Operation Sindoor, the airstrike operation India launched after a terror attack in Pahalgam, he criticised what he termed as poor execution. “It’s baffling that Pakistan was informed ahead of the strikes. The terrorists had fled by then, which reduced the impact of our armed forces’ bravery,” he said, demanding transparency from the government.
“The government must disclose how many terrorists were killed, who they were, and where it happened. Otherwise, this appears to be a compromise on national security,” Tiwari concluded, calling for accountability at the highest levels.
