Washington, Jul 6: In a bold political move, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has launched a new political outfit, the America Party, aiming to challenge what he described as the United States' "one-party system." The announcement marks a deepening rift between Musk and former ally, President Donald Trump.
Once one of Trump’s biggest donors and the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk fell out with the president over his massive domestic spending plan. Musk strongly opposed the plan, warning it would add trillions to the national debt, and accused Republican lawmakers of betraying their promises of fiscal discipline. In response, Musk vowed to defeat every lawmaker who supported the bill and pledged to fight what he called “debt slavery.”

Announcing the formation of the America Party on his social media platform X, Musk said the new party would restore freedom and independence to American voters. He cited an online poll where over 1.2 million users participated, with a two-to-one majority supporting a break from the traditional two-party system. Accompanying the announcement was a meme depicting a two-headed snake, symbolizing what Musk called the country’s political uniparty.
The tech mogul, who has become increasingly vocal on political issues, outlined a strategy to focus on a handful of key Senate and House races in 2026. His goal is to influence legislative decisions and unseat lawmakers who backed Trump’s controversial bill, which has now been signed into law.
The political feud between Musk and Trump turned more personal after Trump reportedly threatened to revoke federal support for Musk’s companies and even suggested a review of his citizenship status, despite Musk having been a US citizen since 2002.
Musk’s entry into American politics through his own party has triggered comparisons to Ross Perot’s independent run in 1992, which split conservative votes and contributed to Democrat Bill Clinton’s victory. While critics fear a similar outcome, Musk remains undeterred, insisting the existing system no longer represents the will of the people.
As the 2026 mid-term elections approach, Musk’s new party could alter the balance of power and further reshape the already volatile American political landscape.
