New Delhi, Jul 4: The enchanting on-screen chemistry between Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan has long intrigued Bollywood fans, not just for their cinematic magic but also for the off-screen speculations that once dominated film tabloids. Now, an old interview of Rekha has resurfaced online, drawing renewed attention to her reflections on working with the megastar.
In a conversation with Rediff, Rekha opened up about what she considered the most memorable compliment she had ever received from Amitabh Bachchan. "I think the only compliment he has knowingly or unknowingly paid me was that he gave me an opportunity to work with a great co-star like him. That is the biggest compliment I have ever received," she said.
The pair, best known for their timeless performance in Silsila, also delivered hits like Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Suhaag, Do Anjaane, and Ram Balram, forming one of the most iconic pairs in Hindi cinema.
Rekha further spoke about the influence the Don actor had during their formative years in the industry. "When we started working together, we were at a very impressionable stage. Each one left his or her impression on the other. If you saw a crowd in those days from a top angle, you just saw a whole sea of heads with the Amitabh hairstyle,” she said, acknowledging that some of his style rubbed off on her too.
Their rumoured relationship, often a subject of public fascination, became even more palpable during the making of Silsila, where art seemed to imitate life. Filmmaker Yash Chopra had once candidly admitted in a BBC Asia interview that he was anxious during the shoot. “Jaya is his wife, and Rekha is his girlfriend; the same story is going on. Anything could have happened because they are working together,” Chopra had said.
While time has moved on, the charm and mystery surrounding the Rekha-Amitabh era continues to stir emotions, with fans still reminiscing about the magic they created on and off-screen.
