IMD warns of heavy rain, strong winds across Karnataka till July 9

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru

Bengaluru, July 3: Karnataka is in for a wet and windy week as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a statewide alert for widespread heavy rainfall and gusty winds over the next seven days. The warning comes as strong monsoon currents surge through central and eastern India, bringing intense weather to both the coast and interior regions.

Coastal Karnataka on high alert

The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada are expected to bear the brunt of the downpour, with heavy rain and wind speeds of 30–40 km/h predicted for Thursday and Friday (July 4 and 5). The IMD has warned that the intensity may remain high for the next 48 hours before gradually easing. However, light to moderate rainfall is expected to persist even after that.

Northern districts to face intense spells

In Belagavi, the IMD has predicted very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds of 40–50 km/h on July 3 and 4. Dharwad is also likely to see similar conditions. The northern interior districts — including Bidar, Bagalkote, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura, and Yadgir — are forecast to receive light to moderate rainfall throughout the week, along with occasional gusty winds.

Heavy rain headed for southern highlands

In the southern interior, districts like Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Kodagu are expected to witness heavy rainfall today and tomorrow. These hilly regions are particularly prone to landslides, and residents are advised to remain alert.

Other areas such as Ballari, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, and Vijayanagara are set to receive scattered moderate rainfall over the coming days.

What to expect in Bengaluru?

For Bengaluru and its surrounding areas, the forecast is for light to moderate showers over the next 48 hours, accompanied by winds reaching 40–50 km/h. Daytime temperatures are likely to hover around 27°C, while nights could dip to around 20°C.

Rainfall may ease after July 7

According to the IMD, rainfall activity is expected to moderate starting July 7, but light to moderate rain could continue till July 9 in several districts. Coastal and ghat regions may continue to receive isolated spells.

Public advisory issued

With the risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas, the IMD has urged residents in affected regions to take precautionary measures. IMD Director N Puviarasan confirmed that the department is closely monitoring the situation and will issue timely updates and advisories as needed.
