Indian Embassy refutes media reports on Defence Attache’s remarks about Operation Sindoor

New Delhi, Jun 30: The Indian Embassy in Indonesia has strongly denied reports suggesting that Defence Attache Captain Shiv Kumar made contentious statements about Operation Sindoor during a seminar held at an Indonesian university. In an official clarification issued on Sunday, the Embassy called the media coverage a "misrepresentation" and said the officer’s remarks were quoted out of context.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Embassy stated, “We have seen media reports regarding a presentation made by the Defence Attache at a seminar. His remarks have been quoted out of context, and the media reports are a misrepresentation of the intention and thrust of the presentation.”

According to the Embassy, the officer’s address focused on India’s commitment to civilian control over the armed forces—unlike some of its neighbours—and highlighted that Operation Sindoor was a calibrated, non-escalatory response targeting terrorist infrastructure across the border in Pakistan.

Operation Sindoor was launched in retaliation to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on May 5, which killed 26 tourists. India has maintained that the mission specifically targeted terror bases and was designed to avoid further escalation.

Despite these clarifications, the controversy has sparked political backlash at home. Opposition parties have renewed calls for transparency and demanded a special session of Parliament to discuss the operation in detail.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh weighed in on the issue, stating on X, “First, the Chief of Defence Staff makes important revelations in Singapore. Then, a senior defence official follows up from Indonesia.” He further questioned the Prime Minister’s silence, asking why an all-party meeting hasn’t been convened and why the government is avoiding parliamentary scrutiny.

The government, so far, has refrained from responding directly to the Opposition’s demands.
