Kolkata, Jun 29: The alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old first-year student inside the South Calcutta Law College premises has triggered widespread public outrage and political uproar, as Kolkata Police arrested a fourth accused the college's security guard on Saturday.

The incident reportedly took place on June 25 inside the guard's room, where the victim was allegedly assaulted by two senior students and an alumnus of the college. The arrested accused include Manojit Mishra, Promit Mukherjee, Zaid Ahmed, and now the security guard, who police say was present at the scene and failed in his duty.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an assistant commissioner, has been formed to probe the case. “The CCTV footage, spanning over seven hours, confirms the victim’s allegations,” said a police officer. The footage reportedly shows the victim being forced into the guard’s room and the movement of all accused.

Police believe the attack may have been triggered by the victim rejecting a marriage proposal from the prime accused. Investigators are now probing whether the crime was premeditated.
On Saturday, the victim was brought to the college for a crime scene reconstruction that lasted over two hours and was videographed.

Meanwhile, political tension escalated as BJP leaders, including Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, were detained while attempting a protest march to the college. The BJP alleged that all the accused have links to the ruling Trinamool Congress and demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation.

Party president J P Nadda has formed a four-member committee—including MPs Biplab Kumar Deb and Manan Kumar Mishra—to visit Bengal and report on the incident.

Trinamool MLA Madan Mitra courted controversy by saying the incident could have been avoided if the girl had taken friends along, sparking further backlash.

Public protests continue across the state, demanding justice for the victim and action against those responsible.
