BJP slams Trinamool government after law college rape case, cites lawlessness in Bengal

New Delhi, Jun 28: Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have come down heavily on the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal following the alleged rape of a student inside a law college in Kolkata. The incident, which occurred on the evening of June 25, has sparked intense criticism of the Mamata Banerjee-led administration’s handling of law and order in the state.

Former Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi condemned the incident, describing Kolkata’s growing crime rate as deeply concerning. “It’s distressing to see Kolkata turning into the crime capital. When a state’s capital becomes synonymous with lawlessness, and instead of controlling criminals the government appears to shield them or downplay the severity of the crime, it signals a grave failure in governance,” he remarked.

BJP leader Dilip Jaiswal called for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s immediate resignation, alleging a total collapse of democratic institutions and governance mechanisms in West Bengal. “The government failed to learn from the previous assault case at a medical college.

With every passing day, law and order continues to deteriorate. The comments made by TMC leaders like Kalyan Banerjee on such matters further reflect the government’s disregard for accountability,” he said.

BJP MP Locket Chatterjee highlighted the repetition of such incidents and the lack of effective action. “It’s been exactly a year since the RG Kar Medical College case shocked the state. Back then, people protested in large numbers, hoping it would be a turning point. But now, history is repeating itself—this time, in a law college. What has changed in this one year?” she questioned.

The incident has intensified the debate over women’s safety on campuses and has reignited concerns about the West Bengal government's responsiveness to crimes targeting women. Critics argue that institutional inaction and political complacency are fueling a climate of fear and impunity.
