Batala, Jun 27: In a chilling incident that sent shockwaves across Punjab, Harjit Kaur, mother of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and another individual were shot dead in Batala late Thursday evening by unidentified assailants.
The gruesome attack occurred on Qadian Road in the Civil Lines area, when Kaur, along with a companion identified as Karanvir Singh, was travelling in a car. Eyewitnesses reported that bike-borne attackers intercepted the vehicle and opened indiscriminate fire, critically injuring both occupants.

While Karanvir Singh succumbed to his injuries at Batala Civil Hospital shortly after the incident, Harjit Kaur was rushed to a hospital in Amritsar in a desperate bid to save her life. However, she too succumbed to bullet injuries during treatment, police confirmed on Friday.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Superintendent of Police Paramveer Singh stated that the attackers fled the scene immediately after the firing and a massive manhunt has been launched to trace the culprits.
The cold-blooded double murder has sent tensions soaring in the region, given Kaur’s connection to the high-profile gangster, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, currently lodged in jail under multiple charges.
Authorities are yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack, even as speculation grows over possible gang rivalry or a revenge angle. Meanwhile, security has been heightened across Batala and nearby districts to avert any retaliatory violence.
