New York, Jun 25: In a groundbreaking political shift, 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani has emerged as the Democratic nominee for the New York City mayoral race, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a closely watched primary. Mamdani secured 43.5 per cent of the vote, outpacing Cuomo who trailed with 36.3 per cent — a result that has stunned political observers across the United States.

As news of his victory spread, curiosity about Mamdani’s background — including his financial standing — also surfaced. According to Forbes, Zohran Mamdani's estimated net worth ranges between USD 2,00,000 and USD 3,00,000, which roughly converts to Rs 1.6 crore to Rs 2.5 crore.

Born in Uganda to renowned Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Harvard professor Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran moved to the United States nearly 25 years ago. Before stepping into politics, he dabbled in music under the stage name Young Cardamom, earning modest royalties of about USD 1,267 (Rs 1.05 lakh) annually to this day.

In 2020, Mamdani won a seat in the New York State Assembly, drawing an annual salary of USD 1,42,000 (approx. Rs 1.18 crore). Official disclosures also show he owns four acres of land in Jinja, Uganda, valued between USD 1,50,000 and USD 2,50,000 (Rs 1.25 crore to Rs 2.08 crore).

If Mamdani wins the final mayoral election in November, he will make history as not only the youngest mayor of New York City since Hugh John Grant in 1889 but also the first Muslim to ever hold the prestigious post. His mayoral salary would then increase to USD 2,60,000 (approximately Rs 2.16 crore) per annum.

With deep roots in both East Africa and India, and a reputation for progressive politics, Mamdani’s rise symbolizes a new wave of inclusive leadership resonating through one of the world’s most iconic cities.
