Kolkata, Jun 21: Two people were killed late Friday night in a bomb blast at Hatia village under Labhpur block in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, following a day-long series of violent clashes between two rival groups allegedly engaged in criminal activities.
According to district police sources, the confrontation stemmed from an ongoing turf war over local dominance. The blast occurred during an especially intense phase of the conflict.
Confirming the fatalities, Birbhum SP Amandeep said an investigation is currently underway, although the identities of the deceased have not been officially released.

However, local sources claim that both victims were linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Unconfirmed reports from villagers also suggest that several others were injured in the blast, but police have not yet verified the number or condition of the injured.
Hatia village has a documented history of gang rivalry, particularly involving illegal activities such as the manufacture of counterfeit coins, reportedly intended for sale to collectors. The two main factions are allegedly led by Sheikh Mainuddin and his aide Sheikh Mustafi, and Sheikh Munir, who has recently gained the upper hand in the area.
Tensions flared up again on Friday afternoon when Mainuddin and Mustafi attempted to re-enter Hatia after a period of absence but were confronted by Munir’s men. Clashes broke out and escalated over the course of the day.
According to villagers, the situation spiralled further when Mainuddin and Mustafi returned late at night armed with crude bombs and weapons, resulting in a fierce confrontation. It was during this skirmish that a stockpile of crude bombs exploded, killing two individuals on the spot.
Police are yet to confirm whether the blast was accidental or a targeted attack. Security in the area has been tightened, and the situation remains tense. Authorities have launched a detailed probe to ascertain the cause of the explosion and to identify those involved.
