Nainital, Jun 20: In a tragic incident, a 19-year-old long-distance runner collapsed and died of a cardiac arrest while training for a marathon along Bhowali Road in Nainital district early Wednesday morning.

The youth, Bhupendra Devli, was accompanied by his friend Vivek (20) during the training session. According to Vivek, Bhupendra collapsed face-first near the Kailakhan area around 5:30 am as they picked up pace.

Vivek rushed Bhupendra to Tallital on a bus and later arranged a car to take him to B D Pandey Hospital in Mallital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Tallital SHO Ramesh Bora confirmed the death and stated that the body was handed over to Bhupendra's family after post-mortem. “Initial findings indicate that he suffered a massive cardiac arrest. The lack of immediate medical assistance may have contributed to the fatal outcome,” he added.

Bhupendra was pursuing an MCA degree at Pal College in Haldwani. The sudden demise has left his friends, family, and college community in deep shock.
