San Francisco, Jun 18: OpenAI’s popular chatbot ChatGPT, which made its way into WhatsApp via a dedicated phone number in December 2024, has now received a significant update that allows users to generate images directly within the WhatsApp interface.
Announcing the feature via a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI confirmed that users can now prompt ChatGPT on WhatsApp to create AI-generated images. This capability mirrors the features already available on the web and mobile versions of the chatbot, and is likely powered by OpenAI’s latest flagship model, GPT-4o.
The image generation function is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to make AI tools more accessible and versatile across platforms. Gadgets 360, one of the tech outlets to test the feature, reported that the image quality and response time—about two minutes—were comparable to that on the desktop app.
However, OpenAI has placed usage limits for users who have not linked their OpenAI accounts to WhatsApp. Such users can currently generate only one image per day through the chat interface.
Besides image generation, ChatGPT on WhatsApp retains its previous functions, including:
• Answering text-based queries
• Generating content and summaries
• Analysing uploaded images
• Responding to voice notes (voice replies are text-based; full voice conversations are not yet supported)
Despite its growing capabilities, the chatbot extension on WhatsApp does not have live web browsing features, which means it cannot answer questions about very recent or ongoing events.
The integration of image generation further strengthens the role of ChatGPT as an everyday assistant, now blending visual creativity with its already established text-based intelligence—directly from one of the world’s most used messaging apps.
