New Delhi, Jun 18: In the wake of one of India’s worst aviation disasters, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba has conveyed deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people of India. His statement comes after a catastrophic plane crash in Ahmedabad claimed over 241 lives.
“I am in deep sorrow by hearing the news of the loss of many precious lives in the airplane accident in Ahmedabad, Gujarat,” PM Ishiba stated. “On behalf of the Government of Japan and the people, I extend heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives and their families. I also pray for the swift recovery of those injured.”

The tragedy occurred when Flight AI-171, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed into a residential complex near BJ Medical College. The accident has shocked the nation and drawn international attention and sympathies.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in Canada for the G7 Summit, held a series of high-level bilateral meetings with world leaders.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi said he had an "exceptional conversation" with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “India and UK ties are getting stronger, reflecting in the ground we’ve covered in areas like trade and commerce,” he wrote. “We will keep working together to add even more momentum to this wonderful friendship. @Keir_Starmer.”
He also met South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and noted the shared commitment to advancing cooperation in fields such as green hydrogen, shipbuilding, commerce, and technology. “India and the Republic of Korea seek to work together in sectors like investment and innovation,” PM Modi posted. @Jaemyung_Lee
PM Modi further shared highlights from his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, calling it a significant step in the 25th year of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership. Discussions included strengthening collaborations in IT, semiconductors, sustainability, and defence cooperation. “We will work closely on counterterrorism and cracking down on terror financing,” he added. @bundeskanzler
Another notable interaction was with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. PM Modi personally congratulated her on her historic election victory. “We both see immense potential in India-Mexico ties, especially in agriculture, critical minerals, healthcare, and semiconductors,” PM Modi stated. @Claudiashein
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi also met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Australian PM Anthony Albanese. He was warmly received in Canada by the host Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this week.
The Ahmedabad air disaster has cast a sombre tone over the summit, with leaders expressing solidarity with India during this difficult time.
