Vizhinjam, Jun 9: Karan Adani, managing director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), proudly welcomed MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship with a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, to the Adani Group’s Vizhinjam International Seaport on Monday. The massive vessel, measuring nearly 400 metres in length and 61 metres wide, is berthed at the port until Tuesday.

Marking its maiden visit to South Asian shores, MSC Irina’s arrival highlights India’s growing prominence in global transshipment. Designed to transport huge volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the ship can stack containers up to 26 tiers high, setting new standards in trade and logistics.

Dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2, the Vizhinjam port’s milestone arrival signals the country’s bold vision for the future of maritime trade.

Launched in March 2023 and sailing under the Liberian flag, MSC Irina represents cutting-edge shipping technology.

In FY 2024-25, Adani Ports handled 450 million metric tonnes of cargo, a 7% growth year-on-year. Mundra, APSEZ’s flagship port, surpassed the 200 MMT cargo mark for the first time ever by any Indian port.

APSEZ targets becoming the world’s largest port operator by 2030, while aiming for carbon neutrality by 2025 and net-zero emissions by 2040.
