Ahmedabad, Jun 8: In a historic event for India’s maritime sector, the MSC IRINA, the world’s largest container ship by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity, is set to dock at the Adani Group’s Vizhinjam International Seaport on Monday. The vessel will remain berthed until Tuesday, underscoring the port’s growing status as a key global trade hub.

The MSC IRINA boasts a staggering capacity of 24,346 TEUs, making it a titan in the international shipping industry. At 399.9 metres long and 61.3 metres wide, the ship stretches nearly four times the length of a FIFA-designated football field.

Purpose-built to enhance container shipping between Asia and Europe, the vessel is a game-changer in global trade logistics. This marks the MSC IRINA’s maiden call at a South Asian port—highlighting Vizhinjam’s readiness to handle Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).

The port, developed and operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. Since then, Vizhinjam has received several major vessels, including the MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, strengthening its position as a vital link in global trade routes.

Launched in March 2023 and sailing under the Liberian flag, the MSC IRINA embarked on its maiden voyage the following month. Its design includes the capacity to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, surpassing the previous record-holder, OOCL Spain, by 150 TEUs.

The vessel also incorporates advanced energy-saving technologies that reduce carbon emissions by up to 4 percent, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

The arrival of the MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam International Seaport highlights not only the port’s strategic importance in the maritime industry but also represents a significant stride toward eco-friendly and efficient shipping. This milestone sets a benchmark for future developments in India’s port infrastructure and global trade connectivity.
