Hyderabad, May 17: On the occasion of National Dengue Day, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi stressed the importance of public responsibility in curbing the spread of diseases like dengue. Leading an awareness rally along with Deputy Mayor Mothe Srilatha Shobhan Reddy, the Mayor highlighted that environmental cleanliness and active community participation are key to preventing mosquito-borne illnesses.

“By taking responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and eliminating mosquito-breeding grounds, we can significantly reduce the spread of dengue,” the mayor stated. Pamphlets on dengue prevention were distributed during the rally, offering residents simple yet effective guidelines to combat mosquito breeding.

Deputy mayor Srilatha Shobhan Reddy said, “The primary goal of this GHMC-led initiative is to enhance awareness about public sanitation.” She emphasized the importance of keeping households clean, removing stagnant water, covering water tanks securely, and proper disposal of plastic and garbage.

GHMC reiterated its commitment to creating a safer and healthier Hyderabad through consistent sanitation efforts. “Our teams are actively working to eliminate mosquito-breeding sites every day, but we need collective responsibility. Every citizen must contribute at home and in their surroundings,” the officials noted.

Senior entomologist Durgaprasad stressed that collaboration between government bodies, educational institutions, community organisations, and citizens is vital. “Cleanliness should start from our homes. We must lead by example,” he added.

Mayor Vijayalakshmi concluded with a strong message: “Environmental cleanliness is our responsibility. Together, we can prevent diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and malaria. Let us adopt good hygiene practices and safeguard our communities.”
