New Delhi, May 14: In a sharp critique of the Centre's response to recent developments in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent military action, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) has condemned the government's silence as both “inexplicable” and “unacceptable.”
In its resolution passed on Wednesday, the CWC expressed deep concern over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lack of communication following US President Donald Trump’s surprise claim that a ceasefire between India and Pakistan was brokered through American trade pressure. The Congress said the government's failure to confirm or deny this assertion had caused widespread confusion and speculation.
Adding to the criticism, the party questioned the abrupt halt of India’s retaliatory strikes, saying the move was shrouded in mystery. “The nation was left without answers. Why did the strikes stop so suddenly? And why hasn’t the government addressed the US President’s unusual statement?” the resolution read.
The Congress also accused the Modi-led administration of compromising India’s long-standing diplomatic position by effectively “internationalising” the Kashmir issue. “By allowing foreign mediation to shape the narrative, the government has dangerously equated India with Pakistan,” it noted, calling this shift damaging to India’s global standing.
Reiterating its earlier demands, the party called for an all-party meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, along with a special session of Parliament to deliberate on the unfolding situation. “Strong leadership doesn’t shy away from questions—it embraces accountability. This is a time to unite the nation, not exclude its voices,” the resolution stated.
The CWC also criticised the Prime Minister for meeting only with NDA Chief Ministers to discuss the military response, labelling it a clear act of politicisation. “At a time of national crisis, the PM’s decision to engage selectively with political allies is deeply irresponsible,” the party said.
The Congress further raised alarm over what it termed a “serious intelligence failure” leading up to the Pahalgam terror attack. Despite known threats in the region, the terrorists managed to carry out a deadly strike, and no accountability has yet been established, the party noted. It urged the government to come clean on how such a lapse occurred under heightened security conditions.
“The country deserves not just action, but answers,” the Congress said, urging transparency and unity as the pillars of effective governance.
