Mumbai, May 9: A recent online survey conducted by Wockhardt Hospital Mumbai Central has uncovered alarming sleep patterns among working Mumbaikars. The survey, which targeted professionals aged 30 to 55 years, found that a significant 63.57% of respondents get less than six hours of sleep on weekdays, signaling a widespread issue of sleep deprivation in the city.
The survey also identified noise pollution as a key contributor to the problem, with 64.23% of participants citing honking, construction noise, and loud neighbors as major disturbances affecting their sleep. Despite this, Mumbaikars still place value on rest, with 75.40% preferring a relaxed pre-bedtime routine. However, only 52.66% of respondents were aware of the connection between poor sleep and health issues.
Another notable finding was that 59.62% of people believed in the ‘weekend catch-up’ myth, thinking that sleeping more on weekends would compensate for lost sleep during the week. Additionally, 44.89% of participants reported relying on tea or coffee to stay awake during the day.
Dr Prashant Makhija, consultant neurologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, highlighted the need for public health interventions and noise regulation. He emphasized the importance of treating sleep as a fundamental aspect of health rather than an afterthought.
