Kolkata, May 9: In a significant development amidst heightened security concerns, the Security Control Organisation (SCO) has identified a family residing in Kolkata with dual citizenship — both Indian and Bangladeshi. Four members of the family, including Vijay Modi, his wife Kasaulya Modi, and their two sons, Dilip Modi and Asish Modi, have been detained for questioning after it was revealed that they held both Indian and Bangladeshi passports.

According to reports, the family initially entered India on valid Bangladeshi visas and settled in South Kolkata’s Palm Avenue area. However, investigations indicate that they continued living in India even after their visas expired. During this period, they allegedly procured forged Indian identity documents, including Aadhaar cards and voter IDs, and later secured Indian passports using these credentials.

The SCO launched an investigation when it became apparent that the family had not returned to Bangladesh after their visas had expired. The investigation uncovered that the Modis had falsely claimed Indian citizenship, aided by fabricated documents. FIRs have been filed against the individuals, and they remain in custody for further interrogation.

In an interesting turn of events, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had previously arrested Azad Mullick, a Pakistani national, who was also residing in Kolkata under similar circumstances. Mullick, accused of operating a hawala racket and being involved in a network that facilitates the procurement of fake Indian passports for illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, was arrested after evidence of forged identity documents was found.

The ongoing investigation into these cases raises serious concerns about illegal immigration and the use of forged documents, with authorities emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and stricter checks to ensure the integrity of the country's immigration system.
