Fatih Akin's 'Amrum' teaser debuts ahead of cannes premiere

Colombo, May 7: Renowned Turkish-German filmmaker Fatih Akin is gearing up for a cinematic masterpiece with the teaser for his upcoming film Amrum, which has just premiered ahead of its world debut at the Cannes Film Festival in the prestigious Cannes Premiere section.

The film, set against the backdrop of Amrum Island in Germany during the final days of World War II, follows the journey of 12-year-old Nanning, who struggles to survive amidst the turbulent times by braving the sea to hunt seals, fishing at night, and helping his mother on the family farm. Despite the war’s hardships, life on the picturesque island almost feels like paradise until peace reveals a deeper, closer danger.

Based on the childhood of German actor, writer, and director Hark Bohm, Amrum features a screenplay initially written by Bohm and re-imagined and directed by Akin. Akin shared that the film’s visual style was inspired by classic cinema, including Bicycle Thieves and Shoeshine by Vittorio De Sica, as well as The Night of the Hunter and Stand by Me. “My cinematic upbringing became the first personal connection to the film,” Akin explained.

Starring Jasper Billerbeck, Laura Tonke, Lisa Hagmeister, Kian Köppke, Lars Jessen, Detlev Buck, and Matthias Schweighofer, the film is produced by Akin and Herman Weigel. Amrum is a co-production between Bombero International, Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, and Rialto Film. The film is set to be distributed by Warner Bros. in Germany and Dulac Distribution in France, with Beta Cinema handling world sales.

Cannes-bound, the film promises to be a poignant exploration of the complexities of childhood and survival in a war-torn world.
