New Delhi, May 6: Union Health Minister JP Nadda, marking the occasion of World Asthma Day on Tuesday, stressed the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment in managing asthma effectively. Observed annually on the first Tuesday of May, the day serves as a global initiative to raise awareness about the chronic respiratory ailment that affects millions across the globe.

The theme for this year, “Asthma education empowers”, underscores the pivotal role of knowledge and awareness in combating the disease.

In a post on social media platform X, Nadda stated, “World Asthma Day serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness about asthma and enhance care for those living with this chronic condition. By emphasising early diagnosis, effective treatment, and proper management, we aim to improve the quality of life for millions of people worldwide.”

Highlighting the collective responsibility towards respiratory health, the Minister called upon healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities to come together in reducing asthma-related complications and deaths.

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, also echoed similar sentiments. Urging citizens to be vigilant about symptoms, she said, “All citizens are appealed not to ignore the symptoms of asthma and get timely tests and treatment done. Improvement in lifestyle, pollution control, and awareness are the best ways to prevent this disease. Let us together contribute towards building a healthy and aware society.”

According to the Global Asthma Report 2022 by the Global Asthma Network, over 35 million people in India are affected by asthma. Globally, the disease affects over 260 million people and causes more than 450,000 deaths each year, most of which are preventable.

The Ministry of Health has identified dust, smoke, and air pollution as major asthma triggers, with symptoms ranging from wheezing and nighttime coughing to laboured breathing.

In its advisory, the Health Ministry stated, “Don’t ignore the signs of asthma – identifying it early is crucial for effective treatment. If you or someone you know shows these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.”

The Ministry further advised asthmatics to use inhalers correctly, avoid known triggers, and ensure regular medical follow-ups to keep the condition under control.

As the country continues to battle rising pollution levels and respiratory illnesses, the observance of World Asthma Day acts as a timely reminder that with the right steps, asthma is a manageable condition.
