Air India Express cabin crew go on mass sick leave, 78 flights cancelled

New Delhi, May 8 (IANS): Air India Express faced major disruption in services as 78 flights were cancelled and many were delayed after cabin crew called in mass ‘sick leave’ to mark their protest against the ongoing transition in the airline.

In 2023, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) gave its go-ahead to the Tata Group's initiative to merge the budget airline AIX Connect (previously known as AirAsia India) with Air India Express.

Sources said the senior employees, including the cabin crew, are unhappy with the changes.

"A section of our cabin crew reported sick at the last minute, starting last night (Tuesday), resulting in flight delays and cancellations. While we are engaging with the crew to understand the reasons behind these occurrences, our teams are actively addressing this issue to minimise any inconvenience caused to our guests as a result,” said the airline spokesperson.

"We sincerely apologise to our guests for this unexpected disruption and emphasise that this situation does not reflect the standard of service we strive to provide. Guests impacted by cancellations will be offered a full refund or complimentary rescheduling to another date. Guests flying with us today are requested to check if their flight is affected, before heading to the airport,” said the spokesperson.

Believe it or not, few days back on a DXB-IXE flight, i asked the air hostess if their salary issue has been sorted out, and she gave a funny grin. Am not surprised expecting this now. We should try to understand the root cause as to why did they do this. It is very easy for us readers to comment, without knowing the inside facts. How many of you have noticed that since SpiceJet has stopped operations to Dubai, the price of the air ticket has gone up and up, and at the moment its exorbitant. Free meals have stopped since Tata took over the AIX airlines. In Feb i paid 100 rs for Masala chai, was really surprised to see, that in May they have made it to 150rs. a 50% increase. Freaking daylight robbery, and they expect passengers to pay in-spite of the high price of tickets. The fuel prices are reasonably low, then why the high prices. All corporate are the same, they are here just for their profits. End of the day, the Net Income matters. Someone has really pointed out, why no landing rights for Emirates/Etihad or even Fly Dubai to come to Mangaluru. Dont you feel its strange. God help us all. :-)

Chandu karla, what you say is partly right.Other side Air India itself is also sick partly :Air India should first of all get fit with proper programmes for staff and their flight plan .I dont give the fault only to crew.Afterall they too are humans. One should treat them as their crew ,not as lest ones. When paysheet and their working conditions are good ,everyone will work with joy. After all they have to look after one family? Who knows how much they paid to get a job in airlines? Otherside employees too should nt give notice of sick leave. Here with Passengers suffer ,and airline too will suffer and pay a lot of punishment charges to Airport. Airline too have to depend on them. Let airline speak to them and come to a decision and clear them what next if this goes on of concequences. Should be last warning.

This disaster was awaited and known, as the airline was having monopoly and were not providing landing rights to other airline, to block their seat demand. Had our govt disagreed and provided landing rights to other foreign airline, then it would not have been the case, as then people could make choice of their own based on airline.

In the highly competitive environment there is no place for such lazy people throw them out. They are no more working for a govt company now they work for private company they should show the efficiency other wise go out. This is the only way for ward for all the govt companies as well . If the country need to grow the inefficient people should be out of the system.

"Air India Express never gave food on flights. I have been travelling by AIX since 2007" Are you sure or blindly spoiling AI Express service quality. Ever since AI express started, they have been serving light meal and still they provide some snacks. Since management has been taken over by Tatas the meals are not provided but one can avail by paying or arrange for the same while making reservation of Air Ticket. First of all, who wants to overfill ones' stomach and rush to the toilet too often?🙏

The administration seems to be turning a blind eye on the need for economical and adequate air travel facility to the 1000s of middle class NRIs slogging in the Gulf and remitting valuable foreign exchange to the country...there seems to be no potent representation for the middle-to-labour class people working in the Middle East...sorry to see them getting over exploited by commercial interests... especially during vacation and other seasons😞😞.. worst than ...

Does Air India Express have BCP plan in place( Business continuity plan)if staff reporting sick or any other Unforeseen events. I am sure they don't have, End user suffers with such actions. TATA should take strict measures on staff. Before doing mass sick they must have approached to management with their concern. If TATA Vistara and Air India Express merging what staff loosing as long as they pay salary there should be no issues. Jai Hind
