This death was expected and we had been slowly and painfully prepared for it every time we met her in recent times and saw the rapid deterioration of her body and her mobility. But the death of a friend, however much we have prepared ourselves for it, when it comes, is intensely painful. Because, we are jolted into the shock of accepting that we can no longer hear the lilt of her laughter, the cadence of her speech or be enfolded in the hug of her warm living body around ours. Her photograph or her memory can never compensate for the living warmth of her presence amongst us, for the touch of her hands, or the changing expressions on her face as she listened to us or we listened to her. But, death in all its finality has to be accepted and we have to learn to live with the memory of the person whose death has left a blank space in our life like a face that has become blurred faded in an old group photo of our childhood and youth. I will remember Olien for her quiet gentleness, and the beautiful grace of her body and its movements. I will always remember her on a certain summer sports day in school when she cleared the long jump, gracefully floating in a perfect arc across the sand, against the sky, to land like a cat on her feet. All sport is a defiance of the pull of gravity and Olien did it with the natural elegance and grace that we see in swiftly moving animals like gazelles and cheetahs. It was painful to see that beautiful body with its wonderful grace of movement slowly becoming feeble and awkward and still. It was painful to see the knowledge of her death in her eyes and acknowledge that message of an impending and inevitable departure which no medicine could delay. It was painful to send her messages and not receive the prompt replies from her which were habituated to. We have to make to do with her memories however inadequately they compensate for the living warmth of laughing and talking with her. But for all of us, her friends, she leaves a memory unblemished by anger or hurt. She was always soft and tender and loving. She laughed with her eyes and all the muscles of her face and the genuineness of her emotions. She was beautiful both in movement and stillness. For me she is the memory of a human body and a human being perfect in the co-ordination of its limbs and its co-ordination with her fellow human beings.
