Lawrence P Fernandes (Lalla) (75), son of the late John P Fernandes and the late Muriel Fernandes, husband of Prescilla Fernandes, father of Pradeep / Jenny and Pramila / Osler, grandfather of Angela, Anya, Daniel and Chris, brother of May, the late Cliffy, Alwyn, the late Linus, the late Beatrice, the late Beryl, the late Lynette, Joan, George, Sydney and Averil, formerly of May Lodge, Falnir, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.

Mortal remains can be viewed from 3:00 pm onwards at St Dominic Church, Ashok Nagar, Mangalore on Wednesday, September 7. Funeral Mass at 3:15 pm, followed by burial at Urwa Church cemetery, Mangalore.

Uncle Lalla was my mother’s brother. My earliest memories are filled with the joy of his presence. He was the life of every party at MayLodge and beyond. He would sing both contemporary and traditional songs in Tulu, Konkani, and English sometimes accompanied by props. All of us young and old would join in the chorus. He was generous both in his hospitality and in in his service to the community. He had the proverbial green thumb and everything he planted flourished. He was a crack shot and I remember going into the surrounding woods with him to hunt in awe. He and his family looked after by Grandmother with great affection and care. For me and for the my many cousins an age has passed and become a memory to be passed on. May he rest in eternal peace and sing with the angels.

Lawrence, popularly Lalla, named after the family’s renowned bachelor doctor and co-worker with Fr. Fr. Augustus Muller, the founder of Muller Hospital, in its initial launch, at Kankanady and whose statues share the front entrance façade of the original modest hospital. Music was in Lalla’s blood-stream and any occasion, happy or sad, was brought alive by his initiated music and singing which he kept going with voice and instruments and with available props till it gathered momentum of its own. Lalla, as head of May Lodge, the ancestral meeting and gathering Mecca, stretched his hand to beyond the family and friends to help people in distress. I will miss his spontaneous launch and sustained music sessions at happy and sad occasions, specially today. May his close family, comprising his wife Precilla (Pressy), son Pradeep, his wife Jenny ,Anjela/ Anya and sister Premila with her Husband Capt Osler and their sons, Daniel and Chriss.
