Udupi-Madras Café

To South- Indians, Udupi- Madras cuisine is the epitome of South Indian Culture.  Udupi Madras Café opened its doors to the public three years ago, offering a variety of delectable South Indian vegetarian dishes. The restaurant is located at 265 Enfield Place, behind the Sussex Centre, Near Square one intersection of Hurontario St. & Burnhampthorpe, in what is affectionately called the heart of Mississauga.

Udupi-Madras boasts of 14 different kinds of Dosas along with Idlies, Vadas, Uttapams and Rice dishes. Owner Vijay Dante has obviously worked very hard to keep his menu authentic and traditional. His chefs are thoroughly trained to prepare the dishes fresh and delicious. He has brought them from Udupi, Madras, Singapore and even U.S.A. With an extensive menu such as this one, Udupi Madras Café definitely has something for everyone.

Vijay Dante has been involved in the restaurant industry for a very long time. He was born and raised in Mangalore and has worked extensively in Abu Dhabi and here in Mississauga. For him and other Mangloreans, the temple of Udupi Cuisine is probably the famous Diana Restaurant in Udupi. Diana is one of the oldest restaurants in Udupi and its cuisine has made a name for itself.

Dante’s goal was to bring Diana to Mississauga, and he has accomplished that in the form of his Café. He states, “My Chef was trained by the chef at Diana himself. He shared his secrets on condition that we would not use that secret in India. So here I am.” In this move, Vijay brought a piece of home to his fellow Mangloreans here in Mississauga and we thank him for that.

From the traditional Mysore Masala Dosa to the fancy Chilly Cheese Dosa to the healthy Spring Vegetable Dosa, Udupi Madras has a variety. However, these mild favourites cannot compare to the super spicy yet super yummy Chettinadu Dosa. A word of warning, make sure you order a sinfully sweet Falooda or a refreshing Mango Lassi to cool the heat off. The Thali is a large and beautiful affair with a metallic pot of rice surrounded by a bevy of vegetarian dishes. But nothing can compare to the house special, the Vegetarian Cutlet. This Diana special is a vegetarian patty packed with beetroots and potatoes and deep-fried to perfection. This is served with a tangy tamarind sauce and spicy green chutney.

Dante plans to bring more Mangalorean favourites such as Pathrades and Mandases to his Café. He also plans to have a breakfast buffet on weekends that will allow people to have a chance to taste everything the restaurant has to offer. He also plans to bring in more Diana specialties such as Gadbad, which is an Ice-cream concoction with all kinds of yummy surprises hidden within, the famous Diana Puri Kurma and Dahiwada.

The Wait staff was prompt and hospitable. Even the food arrived fairly quickly. No doubt Vijay runs his restaurant on a tight schedule and wishes the best for his customers. The cozy restaurant is extremely clean and tidy and surprisingly, it smells very fresh as well. Being a microbiologist, Dante is strict about his cleanliness. He candidly jokes that people would be able to eat off his floors, which is quite believable!

The prices at Udupi Madras Café are extremely reasonable. They also have a Take-Out menu which makes it possible to bring this little piece of Udupi home.
