John Baptist Cornelio (98), veteran community leader and philanthropist of Kakkunje-Shivalli near Udupi, husband of the late Stella Cornelio, passed away on May 24.

Funeral cortege leaves residence for Milagres Church, Kallianpur at 4 pm on Thursday, May 26.

His sons are George Cornelio of Ambagilu, Gilbert Cornelio (officer, Vijaya Bank) and Prof Neri Cornelio of Milagres College, Kallianpur.

Profile:

During pre-Independence days, he had served as a councillor in Mumbai. He was also private assistant to freedom-fighter Sir Dinshaw Vachha. After Independence, he had settled down in Udupi.

He had engaged himself in several religious, cultural, social and educational organizations. For over 40 years, he served as member of Shivalli-Manipal panchayat member and vice chairman. Other responsibilities he handled include: founder-member of and executive committee member of Nittur High School, vice president of parish council, member of executive committee of Milagres educational institutions, leader of the Kakkunje ward, member and president of Herga Agricutural Service Cooperative Society. In all, he served the society for well over 60 years.
