Fr Francis Thomas Baretto OCD (55), who was serving in Austria, belonging to Karnataka Goa Province breathed his last on Saturday August 6, 2011).

He is from Nirkan, Mangalore. He was born on May 15, 1956. After his preliminary education joined the Order of Carmel. He made his first religious profession on February 11, 1979.

Later he received the Order of Priesthood on April 29, 1986. He has served the communities of Mira Road, Mangalore and Belur in India and later he was transferred to Austria and served that particular community for many years.

He was seriously ill for the last couple of days and was in ICU.

Thank God I was able to spend few days with you two years back. Of course you shared some of your pains. You promiosed to spend few days here with me and it never came. It was a shock to hear that Fr. Thomas Baretto is no more. I still cannot believe my eyes and hears!
I remember Baretto, as he was fondly called a jovial, humorous and a caring companion, when I was associated with him in Mount Carmel.

It was so shocking news to hear that Fr. Thomas Baretto passed away. I could not believe and did not accept the fact that he is no more until i could see the photo of his body in the coffin. Even then i find it hard to get reconciled with the fact that my companion and brother in Carmel is no more. My brother how shall I bid farewell to you. I find it so hard. My heartfelt condolences to the dear ones of Fr. Thomas Baretto. His sudden demise reminds me of the fragility of us all. All through his last days in the Klinik, Austria, I was often by his side. He had the best of treatment, but found himself not ok. For three weeks, he had no opportunity to communicate what his heart inspires. He was either put into deep sleep, or in artificial respiration. Ya, dear friend, you could not make it. It's sad to part this way Fr. Thomas. But we will carry on the friedliness and simplicity you witnessed in your life. Rest in peace. We'll miss you.

I was privileged to live with Fr. Baretto for a few years in the same community he was in. I was very much influenced by his simplicity of life. He gave no importance to name & fame, titles and honor.He is a shining example for all the priests and religious that we can perform our ministry without attaching too much of ourselves to power and titles.
