Chikmagalur: Well-known Senior Konkani Playwright Shri Giri is No More

Chikmagalur, Apr 15: Gregory E D’Souza, popularly known as ‘Shri Giri’ on Konkani stage passed away on Sunday April 11 following a cardiac arrest.  He was 75 at the time of his death. 

He is survived by his wife Leena and children Anil, Anita, and Kiran.

Shri Giri was born in Mangalore on December 5, 1935, and completed SSLC from Milagres High School.  

He had a keen interest in photography and developed a taste for Konkani Theater.  He worked with Royal Studio, Hampankatta, Mangalore, for a few years, before he moved to Chikmagalur.

Shri Giri married Leena of Milagres parish on January 22, 1968.  He worked for Konkani weekly ‘Mithr’ as a sub-editor for many years.

He introduced Konkan Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus for the first time to a Mumbai audience in 1967.  Subsequently, he started Anita Studio in 1968.

Shri Giri has also authored more than 25 Konkani plays.  ‘Baullem Phul’, ‘Kalloka Patlo Uzwad’, ‘Zodthi’, ‘Adhunik Sounsar’, ‘Kalki Raat’, and ‘Modhyana Bhorachi Naad’, are some of his popular plays.

Sri Giri worked for Konkani language and culture in the district and also organized Wilfy Nite musical concert in the city.  

In his death, Konkani language has lost a meritorious son and theatre personality of repute. Many Konkani personalities and associations have condoled the untimely death of an illustrious theater personality.
