Fr Lawrence D'Souza S J (UNESCO) (76), son of the late Ligory & Agnes D'Souza, brother of the late Louie, late Elsie, late Jerry, late Mattie, Sr Blanda AC, Harry Canada, Sr Bernerdine (Sisters of Charity), Stany & Richard (Richie), of Mulky, Mangalore passed away on Friday, April 10 at 7 am in St John's Hospital, Bangalore.

Funeral mass on Monday April 13, 9 am at St Joseph's Boys High School Chapel, Museum Road followed by buriel at Mount St Joseph's Cemetery.

Fr Lawrence, a Jesuit Priest, taught for many years at St Aloysius College High School and was very popular among the students and among the poor people of neighbouring villages for his commendable work through "UNESCO" clubs. He is the founder of UNESCO clubs in India and UNESCO had honoured him for his service to the poor through these clubs. Former studnts will fondly remember him for his systematic classes; he would write every point that he has to on a folding board and display it to the students so that every student would clearly understand what was taught.

After his retirement he started working among the Koraga Community, the community that was considered least in society. He did research on the origin and the cultural habits of this group and wrote books and articles on them. He continued his research work on many other tribal communites of our State including on "Hakki Pikki's" and published more than 30 books on these tribals. This was the pioneering work that Fr Lawrence did for the upliftment of the poor and the tribals. May he rest in peace.

Fr. Lawrence or Uncle Lawra, as the students fondly called him was the GREATEST of all teachers. The comments on this page are a testimony to it. I was the first Secretary of the UNESCO Club when Fr Lawrence started it. He had put tremendous efforts to start it and with a purpose. I hear he suffered a lot through ill health these last few years. He is truly a saint, as he had no enmity and malice towards anyone. May his soul rest in peace, amen.

I would rate Fr. Lawrence as one of the best Teachers of St. Aloysius High School during our times in the early Seventies. The other Teacher who had inspired me, was Sri Panduranga Pai, who taught me Mathematics in Class 8. Both were excellent teachers and humble human beings. We lived inside St. Aloysius Campus and so Fr. Lawrence was very close to us. We can never forget him. My heartfelt condolences to the Jesuit Community and to Fr. Lawrence's Family members. We are very sorry to hear the sad demise of our dear Fr. Lawrence D`Souza SJ, who was the parish priest of Jeppu parish for a short period. He was very helpful for our children. When our son, Sch. Loy Manohar Fernandes SJ demised, in his condolence message to us he vividly remembered the incident that took place when Loy was the Altar boy. Fr AS Rodrigues, Fr Isidore Pinto, Sch. He was a wonderful priest.Hard working , dedicated and loving. I loved to work with him when I was with the UNESCO club.One day he came to me and said to me that a member ped off from a presentation on a symposium organised every year by UNESCO. He asked me to take his place even though it was on the next day. Although I have never spoken in public All he said was " I'm asking you because I know you can do it". This exposed me to public speaking with confidence. It was with his success that the United Nations awarded him with a SUV which was well used for social work. We will miss him. Ashok

It is sad to hear the demise of UNESCO Father. I was his student during 1978-80.A strict disciplinarian and a person of who utilised the available time systematically and a who was committed to his students and work.Attending his classes on Social Studies was a pleasure.No students had guts to face him or avoid his classes.We were able to see and read the Britanica in his room for the first time. His references were up to date. We have to learn a lot from such a great personality.After retirement his work with the "Koragas " of Mangalore or the Devadasis of Belguam and Bellary was even recognised by the national and international authorities.We pray god that we have many more Fr. In Fr. Laurie I have lost my best friend. I met him as a 12 year old and became his best friend and remained so for 29 years. He was very very dear to me. I met him 2 years back in whitefield where he was staying and now I just cannot believe that he is no more. He was a teacher par excellence and a superb human being. Kind, considerate, sympathetic and most loving. He was always smiling even in the worst of health conditions. It is very sad to hear that Fr. Lawrence is no more. He taught me for three years in the High School and I remember his dedication and committment even today. He would prepare for his class systematically with current affairs, charts and notes on his rolling board. He really thought us the world affairs through his association with Unesco.

I also remember him adopting the Ranipura village and his passion to uplift the poor there. I am proud to have a teacher of the calibre of Fr. Lawrence who are hard to find in today's world. I was a student of Fr Lawrence D'Souza during 1969 to 1970 in St Aloysius High School. I used admire his simplicity and down to earth personality. He had a huge influence on me which made me a better person. We used to walk after classes and he visited my house walking with me several times. We will miss him and may his soul rest in peace.

Demise of a rollmodel teacher. Fr Lawarence was a simple, dedicated and affectionate disciplinarian. He visited every student's house, wrote the sinopsis of his lessons on his rolling board so that every student could follow his class.He corrected the answer papers on the very night of the exams and d the result the next morning itself.True to his deication every student passed the test.He was a grat researcher and scholar.

He started the UNESCO Club in Mangalore and exposed the students to international standards. His life was a life of sacrifice and true to his life he died on Good Friday , the day Jesus sacrificed his life for the good of mankind. We miss you and no one can replace you.A peson like you may not be born again . May the angels take you diectly to heaven.
