Sr Lydia SCB/Mary Braggs (92), belonging to the congregation of Sisters of St Charles Borromeo, passed away on Aug 3, at Mary Immaculate Convent Shimoga.

Mortal remains will be brought to St Charles Convent Chapel, St Thomas Town, Lingarajapuram on Tuesday, August 5 for viewing from early morning, followed by Mass and funeral service at 11.00 am.

My sister Sr. Angeline ( now 92 years ) was her colleague and were very close friends thus I came to know her full of enthusiasm, devotion n dedication not mention her jovial humour. With profound sorrow and deep gratitude to God, we remember the life of Sr. Lydia Braggs, a devoted Religious, loving Educator, committed formator, and courageous leader, who returned to her Heavenly Father on the 3rd of August, the feast day of St. Lydia of Thyatira. Born on November 1st, 1933, in Omzoor, Mangalore, she began her early education at St. Joseph’s Higher Primary School in Omzoor and later continued her studies at Capitanio, Mangalore, She completed her teacher's training at the same institute and served as a teacher at St. Joseph’s Higher Primary School in Bajpe for five years. In 1958, answering God’s call, Mary Marceline Braggs joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo. She was professed on January 12th, 1961, and took the religious name Sr. Lydia Braggs,. Over the next 64 years, Sr. Lydia served the Church and the Congregation with exceptional dedication. Her mission took her to various places, including Bangalore, Vakola, Bhadravathi, and Shimoga, where she was entrusted with numerous responsibilities. Sr. Lydia served as the Headmistress Formator, Superior, Vice Provincial, Province Bursar, and Provincial Superior for 8 years. In these roles, she guided the Sisters with wisdom, hard work, religious fervor, and unwavering faith. Throughout her life, Sr. Lydia was known for her quiet strength, firm convictions, and deep love for the mission of the Congregation. She encouraged her Sisters to work diligently for vocations, and during her tenure as Provincial Superior many new mission places were established. For the past 13 years, Sr. Lydia lived in Shimoga, embracing a quieter life. She joyfully carried out small tasks with great love, including tailoring, cooking, gardening, and managing accounts.Her presence was a blessing to the community, a living witness to humility, prayer, and silent service. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of her dear Congregation and family. Rest in Peace Sr Lydia.

We thank Lord Almighty for gift of Sr Lydia to his mission. She spent many fruitful and devoted years with the congregation of Sisters of St Charles Borromeo. Our deepest condolences are with all the Sisters of the congregation and also her surviving siblings Sr Lily and Aunty Irene and all extended family members. We fondly remember our last visit to her at Shimoga convent. She was always concerned and enquired quite often about our children and we are remain grateful for her prayerful support. May her noble soul rest in eternal peace.
