MCCP Annual Volleyball, Throwball Tourney Sees Eager Partcipation

The teams lead by Melwin Pereira and Celine D'Souza emerged the winners in the annual MCCP volleyball tournament for men and throwball tournament for ladies respectively held at Muscat Sports Club Grounds, Al Wadi Al Kabir here on Friday, January 14.

Roshan Mathias and Shaila D'Souza, two powerful players of the community, were nominated as the best players of the tournament by the officiating referees. The event was the annual tournament organized by the Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish (MCCP – Sts Peter and Paul Church – Ruwi) for their members.

The programme commenced with a welcome note by Alexander Sequeira, sports secretary of MCCP. Jacintha Serrao, internal auditor of MCCP, offered the prayers seeking heavenly blessings on the tournament and the participants. Monica Dantis, president of MCCP extended a warm welcome to the players and members on behalf of the current executive committee.

Chief guests of the tournament were Cyprian Misquith, finance manager of WJ Towell Building Materials (Cyprian is also vice president – finance and sports committee of MCCP and president of ABC Toastmasters Club – Ruwi) and Jenny Joseph, managing director of Al Shariqa Trading, Sultanate of Oman. They were presented with bouquets by Stacy Vaz and Lancy Lobo.

There were eight teams in the volleyball tournament. Adrian Saldhana, Alexander Sequeira, Jacintha Serrao and Cyprian Misquith organized the formation of the teams. The main coordinator of the tournament was Adrian Saldhana, well-known sports personality of the community and past sports secretary of MCCP. The referees were Shrikant Shetty, Rajesh Shetty and Queena D'Souza.

Russel D'Souza entertained the audience with his inimitable style of commentary. The sound system was provided by Lancy Pinto. The scorer of the tournament was Peter Serrao.

The sponsors of the event were Jenny Joseph, MD of Al Shariqa Trading, W J Towell Building Materials, Raphael Quadros, Zahrat Al Rowdha Trading, Mumtaz Tea, Assarain Food Products, Dolphy Vaz, Oman Plastic Industries LLC.

Mega sponsors of the year are Omantel, Oman International Bank and Muscat Golden Services LLC.

Nancy Vaz, general secretary of MCCP proposed the vote of thanks.

Prize distribution ceremony was conducted by Cyprian Misquith and guest of honour was Jenny Joseph. Monica Dantis, president, Nancy Vaz general secretary, Lancy Lobo, vice-president, cultural, spiritual and community services, Simon D’Souza, honorary treasurer, Jacintha Serrao, internal auditor, Alexander Sequeira, sports secretary, Deepak Ranjan D’Souza, cultural secretary, Reena Lobo, spiritual secretary and Celine D’Souza, community services secretary were also on the dais.
