Forcible cremation shameful move of UP govt, says Rahul

New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday dubbed the "forcible cremation" of the Hathras gang-rape victim by police as a "shameful" move of the Uttar Pradesh government.

"It is a shameful move of the state government to oppress the Dalits and show them their place in society," he tweeted in Hindi, tagging a news report on the cremation of the 19-year-old woman.

"Our fight is against this despicable thinking," the Congress leader added.

Earlier, the party had demanded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's resignation for "not acting in time".

The 19-year-old Dalit woman from Hathras was cremated early Wednesday in her native village amid tight security.

Anything can happen in India now. You could be raped/murdered/buried/cremated and even Indian court might admit that you were never born. This is new India.

It is not wrong to raise your voice against the heinous crime. You are undermining the seriousness of the crime by saying it is not right to say 'foul play'. If the victim's family is denied to give their daughter a dignified death, then what else is it? UP has a terrible track record in curbing crime, and most of it is never reported. Why did it take so long for the police to register the crime and nab the accused? The media did not report this until the sad demise of the victim. Encountering the accused is bad as a precedent because it bypasses the rule of law. If you can encounter anyone on the basis of a charge sheet, what are the courts here for?
