Udupi, Jul 16: Members of district Mahila Congress Committee submitted an appeal to the chief minister and governor on Thursday, July 16 through DC Udupi G Jagadeesha, regarding extending support to the ASHA workers.

ASHA workers are the real health warriors in managing COVID-19 throughout the country. But they are not getting government fixed remuneration. They have not even had access to PPE kits necessary to safeguard their health in this pandemic, the committee said.

There are 42,000 ASHA workers working in Karnataka, but they have not been paid salaries for the last four months by the government. Although they are working hard in containing the virus and creating awareness in villages by risking their lives. They are doing daily follow up in containment zones, the members of the committee asserted.

Now, the workers are being paid Rs 4000 monthly which is really a paltry sum for their risky job. KPCC president DK Shivakumar had also visited the chief minister on behalf of ASHA workers to request the government to extend support to them.

When they go to fields, they need PPE kits to protect themselves from COVID-19, which is not provided to them, the Committee said.

In this regard, the Udupi district Mahila Congress members have submitted a memorandum copy to the Udupi DC requesting support for all the ASHA workers in the state.

Veronica Cornelio, Dr Sunitha Shetty, Jyothi Hebbar, Roshini Oliver, Gopi K Naik, Chandrika Shetty, Fauziya Sadhik, Jyothi Burretto, Rozalin Crasta, Shanti Periera, Marina John, Irin D’Souza, Prameela Jathanna were present.
