Mangaluru, Jun 5: After the system of issuing passes for students and employees commuting between Mangaluru and Kasargod has been launched, hundreds of people registered themselves for this facility on Wednesday and Thursday. The district administration is in the process of scrutinising them and issuing passes.

Deputy commissioner Sindhu Rupesh, said that a large number of applications have been received through the web portal, and that they are being checked. She said it will take some time to issue passes to all concerned.

As no passes were issued, no one came to Mangaluru from Kasargod on Thursday, official at the Talapady check post said. The officials feel that it might take some days for all the people to get passes.

Vehicle owners

Those who own vehicles have to feed their vehicle registration number and what kind of vehicle they own in the web portal, for seeking inter-state travel passes. If these details are not provided, passes will not be issued. At present, it has been decided to allow only those people who have their own vehicles.

The deputy commissioner stated that in the first phase, preference is given to those who have vehicles. It has been clarified that the people should not have the mistaken notion that this is a free travel permission. Initially, there will be certain restrictions, and in the coming days, depending on the need of the people, suitable decisions will be taken, she stated.

Assistant commissioner Madan, said that till Thursday, 1,088 applications were received through the web portal. He said that more applications are pouring in and they are being verified.

On Thursday, people residing in Kasargod district could not come to Mangaluru as the online passes arranged by Dakshina Kannada district administration were not received. Many waited for hours at Talapady gate before returning. But people from Mangaluru have got e-passes of Kasargod district administration and have attended to their work at Kasargod and returned.

The pass system introduced by Dakshina Kannada administration after the commuters fought for it, could not dispense passes to people till Thursday evening. Some staff who reached Talapady with reference number of passes, could not cross the border. Many from Kasargod working in companies at Mangaluru had received phone calls to inform about availability of passes. They were also warned of being dismissed if they did not report for duty. They therefore awaited for passes the whole day to be delivered through mobile phones. Even though some contacted people’s representatives, it did not yield any result.

Urwa police sub-inspector Shreekala, who is discharging duty at Talapady check point, said that reference number is not enough and e-passes have to be produced. She said that the people can leave Mangaluru for Kasargod only if they have valid e-passes.
