Kurdish journalist shot dead in northeastern Iraq

Baghdad, Oct 17 (IANS): A Kurdish presenter for NRT television, along with his wife and their son, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the city of Sulaimaniyah in northeastern Iraq, a channel official said.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening when the gunmen opened fire on Amanj Baban, his wife Lana Mohammedi and their son Hano, said Shwan Adel, head of NRT channel, Xinhua news agency reported.

"The victim has no enemy ... We are waiting for the investigations by the security forces in Sulaimaniyah," Adel told Xinhua.

Baban is presenting a popular program called "Without Borders" on the NRT. His wife Mohammedi previously was an anchor in the local Kerdasat channel for several years.

NRT is one of the independent channels in Iraq's semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan. It broadcasts in both Arabic and Kurdish languages.
