Uma Nath Singh sworn in as first Meghalaya Lokayukta chair


Kohima, Feb 23 (IANS): Former Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court Uma Nath Singh was sworn in on Friday as the chairperson of Nagaland's first Lokayukta.

Justice Singh was administered the oath of office by Governor P.B. Acharya at a ceremony held at Raj Bhawan.

Among those present in the ceremony were Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Leader of Opposition T.R. Zeliang, cabinet ministers, legislators and government officers.

Justice Singh is the first Lokayukta of Nagaland and will hold the office of the Lokayukta of Nagaland for a term of five years or till he attains the age of 70.

The Nagaland government had given an undertaking before the Supreme Court that it would appoint Lokayukta within three months.

civil society group, Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT), had been demanding appointmnt of Lokayukta to put a check on corruption, bring about transparency in the system and make administrative machinery citizen-friendly.
