Udupi: KFD scare unabated - district continues to witness deaths of monkeys

Udupi, Jan 22: Eight more dead bodies of monkeys were recovered on Monday January 21 in different parts of the district. These monkeys had died in Kamalashile, Hosangadi near Siddapur, Shirva, Japthi, Belman, Mandarti, Kunjal and Herur.                       

Out of them, the samples from the body of a monkey found at Kunjal were sent for testing.  Out of the remaining monkeys, two had died of other reasons. Two of the bodies had been thoroughly decomposed.

Test report about the carcass of monkey found from near Kabbinale has been received. It has confirmed that this monkey died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), also known as monkey fever. Samples had been sent to both Shivamogga to Manipal for testing. This report was received form Manipal.

People need KPM oil bottles to avoid contracting this disease when inside or near the forests.   Various organizations have taken up the task of distributing these bottles, which have been procured through health department.

Out of 107 persons admitted into Manipal hospital for suspected KFD, 42 have tested positive. 28 continue to be treated in the hospital. Two who had been discharged, have got admitted again as fever has relapsed in them.

A person from Aralagodu primary health centre in Sagar, Shivamogga district, was admitted into Manipal hospital with suspected monkey fever on Monday. On Monday, six monkeys died in forests surrounding Sagar, reports said.
