Bengaluru: Original Aadhaar petitioner K S Puttaswamy welcomes SC verdict

Bengaluru, Sep 26 (IANS): Retired Justice K.S. Puttaswamy, one of the first to question the legality of Aadhaar, on Wednesday welcomed the landmark Supreme Court judgement upholding its validity but restricting it to disbursement of social benefits.

"After holistic consideration, my opinion is that the majority judgement on the validity of Aadhaar Act is correct though I have not read the whole judgement yet," the 92-year-old retired Karnataka High Court judge told the media here.

A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra held that Aadhaar would be voluntary and not mandatory with an option to exit.

On linking of Aadhaar with Permanent Account Number (PAN) mandatory, the retired judge said those who pay income tax are limited and they belong to a separate class.

Thanks to pride Kanndiga K S Puttaswamy the honourable Supreme Court has firmly put an end to the mass surveillance exercise being carried out under the guise of Aadhar by the Central Government and the grotesque distortion of an idea conceived by the United Progressive Alliance government.

Section 57 being struck down as unconstitutional is important because the BJP-led NDA Government was pushing an agenda of mass convergence through the intimidation of private companies which had begun insisting on Aadhaar details.

For Congress, Aadhaar was an instrument of empowerment.
For the BJP, Aadhaar is a tool of oppression and surveillance.
Thank you Supreme Court for supporting the Congress vision and protecting INDIA.

SC upholds legitimacy of aadhar - says it has a valid aim of checking leakages.
Supreme Court upholds section 139AA mandating linkage of aadhar with PAN.
PMLA rule providing for mandatory bank account and aadhar bank linking is struck down as constitutional.
