Udupi: 'Laxmeesha' - elephant of Shiroor Math found dead

Udupi, Sep 22: About two months now since Shiroor Sri Laxmivarateertha Swamiji breathed his last, the Swamiji's pet elephant, 'Laxmeesha' passed away.

Shiroor Swamiji had left for the heavenly abode on July 19 this year. Laxmeesha's carcass was found lying at Kallalla zone within Nagarahole national park limits two days back.

Laxmeesha had gone missing from the Mattigodu domesticated elephants camp 20 days back when the herd was left to graze, in a state of musth. The officials believe that the tusker would have fought with a herd of elephants in a state of musth and got killed in the bargain.

This elephant had been given to Shiroor Math here during the second Paryaya period of Sri Laxmivarateertha Swamiji when Veerappa Moily was Karnataka chief minister in 1993. Laxmeesha had of late been showing signs of disobedience and going out of control and therefore shifted to Mattigodu camp about five years back.

If the gentle creature has got into a fight with the herd of wild elephants, then there should be sufficient evidences on the body of the animal. I hope people might have not poisoned the animal for their benefit and to save their crops. Another possible would be snake bite of king cobra. Investigation has to be carried out to a high level, as our elephants are getting disappeared at a raging speed. It should not happen that we would see the elephants only at the zoo and then read in books. These animals are highly intellectual and intelligent. May the soul of this gentle giant rest in peace.
