Bengaluru: Kumaraswamy promises to consider bringing down oil prices

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Sep 12: Karnataka chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy, said that the state government has decided to cut down duty on diesel and petrol to bring down prices of these commodities in the state. He said an order to this effect would be soon issued. He said he will discuss the issues with the officials in the state and at New Delhi.

Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan have already taken a decision to bring down pries of these commodities a bit by cutting down state's duty.

"Because of certain moves of the Union government, oil prices have risen. We plan to bring down the prices of petroleum products by cutting the cess the government has currently been levying on these products. A final decision would be announced after holding conversation with officials of the finance department," Kumaraswamy clarified.

The chief minister claimed that compared to other states, Karnataka is not levying huge cess on petrol and diesel, and that compared to neighbouring states, prices of petroleum products are lowest in Karnataka.

Minister, Krishna Byre Gowda, said that till 2013, high rate of taxes were being levied on petroleum products and that the rate of cess in Karnataka on petrol is the lowest in the country. He said he opposes the Central government, which hiked diesel and petroleum prices nine times during the last four years, Karnataka has hiked its price twice, and again lowered them twice.

So long as oil prices are determined not nationally but internationally, national governments cannot play with basic prices, but they can adjust the taxes which are much more than the basic price by adding excise taxes at a much higher rate than GST. This policy brings in jackpots to both the Centre and the States, and if Karnataka wants to reduce the prices in the State the only way it can do is to slash its share of excise taxes. Similarly, the Centre should do the same on a country-wide basis. Regrettably, neither level of government is prepared to sacrifice this bonanza as do many other countries, including Canada.
Motorists are easy targets as they need the automobile for every day use and public transportation is woeful. One of the best ways to shell out high prices is to cut down on the number of trips a driver makes each day and not use their vehicles for frivolous trips.

Its just a ploy to consolidate his 'chair' by winning peoples heart. HDK increased the prices couple of months earlier to waive of the farmers loan. Now if he brings down , this 'defeciet' has to be set off somewhere. Where, ? Thats the biggest question. If its no where, then the only option is 'the next Govt ' . They will have to bear the losses incurred and it might be a huge sudden hike at that point of time.
In any case RaGa has to approve it first, for the simple reason that it may make Cong look like side heros.

Just feel good factor of reducing ₹2 will not serve any purpose.
Instead bring out a detailed manifesto and master plans for the next 4 years of development. This coalition is directionless on development projects.
