Udupi, Sep 5: Catholic Educational Society Udupi (CESU) celebrated Teachers’ Day on Tuesday, September 4, at Mother of Sorrows Church hall here.
Udupi DDPI Sheshashayana who was the chief guest, offered flowers to photo of late Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnana along with other guests as tribute.
Udupi bishop and president of CESU Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo in his presidential address said teacher is equal to God. “The position of teacher is more important than that of a father. Teachers are playing important role in shaping the students to become good leaders of the nation. Nowadays, it is unfortunate that the teaching profession is restricted to teaching purpose alone. A teacher needs to focus on the development of a nation. Without teachers, development is impossible. There is a need to teach students moral values,” he said.
“We cannot say that all students are putting honest effort in study. The ethics are declining. Earlier, there was different education system called Gurukula, where teachers imparted their knowledge to students at their ashrams. They were the only guiding force for everything,” he added.
The bishop stressed that the relationship between a teacher and student is intimate. “Every child believes that Guru is first role model and superman. That is why this profession is a noble one. A teacher plays a crucial role in the life of a growing child. Now the time has come to think if a teacher is doing justice to his/her post? Today teachers are participating in political affairs, business, casteism, and communism,” he regretted.
“There are many teachers working hard without expecting results. Most of the children aim to become doctors, engineers and MBA degree holders. No child aims to become a teacher. There is less intention of making those children a good citizen of the nation. Let everyone pray their teachers and let us memorise all their teachers’ every day," he wished.
The DDPI spoke about Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishna. “He was a philosopher, politician, and a good teacher too. Teachers’ day is like refreshment day for all teachers. Children are the evaluator of teachers. A teacher must love his/her students and speak to win their heart. Do all teachers give justice to their problem? One needs to think,” he said.
Over 34 retired teachers received honour from the bishop and guests.
Retired teachers of Kannada medium primary schools namely Narasimha Nayak, Mable Hilda Lewis, Harold D’Mello, Philomena Irene D’Souza, Juliayan Moras, Lucy Pereira, Philomena D’Souza, Jecintha Miranda, Shankara Prabhu, Jecintha D’Souza, Florine Mascaranhas, Irene Menazes, Irene Tauro, Matilda Sequera, Jecintha Lobo, Clara Mathias, Irene Rodrigues, Monthy Mary D’souza and Santhosh Kumar Hegde were honoured.
Retired teachers of English medium schools namely Emiliyana Josphin, Collin D’Souza, Philomena, Quadros, Elsie Lewis and Cecilia Lewis were honoured.
Retired teachers of Kannada medium high schools namely Leela D’Silva, Suchithra, Stanli Dinamani and Flavy M Futardo were feted for their service.
Retired teachers of PU College U B Nagraj, Manjunath S Hegde and Putta and Sirli Mathias, Gopalakrishna and Padmanabhan S were feted.
The excellence in education, highest scorer in different subjects and achievers in sports were recognized and honoured with certificates on the occasion.
Valerian Mendonca, correspondent of St Mary’s Educational Institutions extended the welcome address and Fr Lawrence D’Souza, secretary of CESU rendered vote of thanks.
