Bengaluru: Drop in demand, 30 private engineering colleges in state fail to get students

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Aug 21: Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) and COMEDK are done with the admissions of undergraduate engineering courses for the academic year of 2018-19. More than 30 private engineering colleges in the state failed to attract even a single student.

According to the information available, around 62% of the total seats that were on offer under COMEDK quota are not filled. To quote in numbers, there were 16,236 seats on offer to be grabbed. Even after the closure of the admissions a mammoth 10,175 seats have remained vacant.

As per the information available from COMEDK, 33 colleges failed to get even a single student on their roll, while the number of students enrolled in 33 other colleges were in single digits. Only six colleges got 100% of seats filled, while the percentage was between 80 to 99% in 10 other colleges.

According to Dr S Kumar, executive secretary, the trend of diminishing demand for engineering courses is not new. This is observed since the last eight years as per Kumar's version.

According to an official of COMEDK, the substandard facilities in the colleges are also to blame for this fiasco. The official says, "The present generation of students is smart and they do not get fooled by advertisements and tall claims. It is time for engineering colleges in the state to rebuilt their infrastructure and provide quality education."

Mechanical and civil streams are not in demand. Surprisingly, computer science stream, which was not popular for the last three to four years, is in high demand this year.

This is really a good news. The unscrupulous college will close down and the deteriorating standard of education due to this type of sub standard college may improve.

Now a days many parents can afford to send their children outside India with the same fee structure and in addition they are allowed 4 hours per day part time job to cover their expenses. Secondly, these days there are No jobs creations in the engineering category much and Engineers are very common in every place. Better to stop new grants for engineering collages and give more preference to Finance, Business and Agriculture studies so that they can start their own business .
I have No comments on the Infrastructure.

what is COMEDK -it’s an consortium of medical engineering and dental colleges of Karnataka formed by private managements. Earlier an COMEDK entrance test was held and allotment was based on this test for management quota. Now management Seats are filled based on CET ranking which is just mandatory and not merit based( that is the candidate should have a CET rank)so mangement seats are filled this way in engineering only. Whereas in medical and dental NEET is the criteria. It gives a wrong picture again but who will understand this . Simply speaking mangement seats also are now filled based on CET

RD: You are wrong. Even today Comedk conducts it's engineering entrance exam and allots seats fro engineering streams. There ia quota system bewteen Govt : Comedk which is around 40: 60. So only 40% seats goes to government and balance is managed by Comedk .Out of this 60% around 15% is management or NRI quota. If the 60% quota is not filled through Comedk ,then it goes back to management to do direct admissions. The selection by CET as you mentioned is only for Medical stream based on the NEET score. All the colleges are supposed to select through the CET-NEET- Medical matrix. But there are deemed universities who are free to select their own candidates and part is done through CET. if you see the CET- Engineering there were 47156 seats available in first round and after the final second casual round there are around 27000 seats left .This is general category .So think about other categories. It is around 50% seats left in Govt and private colleges. So the seats available in Comedk is much less than this and there also 10000 are left

No wonder , that is why we are lagging behind engineering related infrastructure,we are no more interested in innovations in said field. This is the reason behind why we import more than export.

@Godwin, you read it wrong. The demand for seats in substandard colleges is nil. Students are aware that the degrees obtained from these colleges do not command any value or fetch a job. Campus selection is zero. To counter your argument that Indians lack innovation see the demand for IIT's, BIT and NIT's. If the quality of education is good in an institution, company's come for campus selection, students get jobs comparatively easy. That is the simple logic. These badly equipped and poor teaching staff Engineering colleges were opened with the help of bribes with a sole purpose of making money and now they have failed.

Past 4 years the education in India has become very costly for NRIs. Students get admission abroad easily with same amount of money without hassle. Also some students are just picked up providing them scholarship abroad. Life seems to be bit harder in India these days because of the high cost of living...Hope things get better before a complete brain drain...

By looking at the figures of COMEDK that 10000 seats are left out ,it is not surprising. The fees charged by these colleges range from Rs 1.2 - 1.8 lac/year. At these exorbitant fees is the engineering degree worth. Imagine a student joining the college and spending around Rs 2- 3 lac /year including hostel fees.
And what is the worth of this degree. Companies are paying salaries less that Rs 10000per month and it companies who pay Rs 18000 per month. Is it worth spending such an amount for a degree which cannot get a salary or a job. Presently non engineering and medical stream students get better jobs than engineers. If it is 10000 seats left at COMEDK , the number for CET of Karnataka is around 27000 that also after 2nd casual round. Similar is the case in states like Andhra and Haryana or other where everyone started putting engineering colleges and played with the students life at low quality education. Some people tried to convert these to medical colleges .but the MCI regulations did not allow them. This is the fate of our engineering education where there are no jobs .

Okay, let's put it in simple business language.
    Business is down!
    Why?
    Poor quality infrastructure.
    Dishonest management.
Capitation fee being misutilized(Expensive latest model BMW, BENZ you name it) by management members.
No efforts by the management looking out for decent campus recruitments for the pass outs with good academic performances
    And many more..

Improving quality education is the only solution or else loose out students in favor of foreign engineering colleges.
If so many students are going abroad for further studies means, good colleges are in demand.
One more thing; why excessive supply over demand in Engineering sector?
While in medical field, it's other way, colleges are less and students are more, many are opting out for they can't afford the fees.
It's imperative to set up more Medical colleges and fill the gap between demand and supply.
